As a spin-off to my Battle of the B-sides function, I’m happy to announce the arrive of “Battle of the Title Tracks!” On this function, I’ll be pitting three Okay-pop title tracks/singles towards one another and selecting a winner. These songs will principally be from pre-2016 since I’ll attempt to deal with music I haven’t but written about on the weblog.
As at all times, the competitors is all in good enjoyable. Most significantly, I hope you uncover (or re-discover) some nice songs!
Beast – Breath (2010)
Breath was one of many very first Okay-pop songs I used to be obsessive about, so I’m somewhat biased right here. I’m in love with its introduction – a dramatic heartbeat-like percussion framing rap and vocal ad-libs earlier than the rugged beat drops in. This beat will get me each time, however the tune doesn’t solely depend on manufacturing. The melodies are sharp and honed all through. I really like the modifications in depth, from the short phrasing of the verses to the extra effusive, theatrical pre-chorus.
Then, the monitor rips itself open at its climax for a sequence of stirring energy notes that usher us out on a excessive. It’s the proper melding of sheer expertise and a tune that pulls no punches. There isn’t a uninteresting second, which makes Breath certainly one of Beast’s legendary efforts.

Younique Unit – Maxstep (2012)
Maxstep is a mega-collaboration of SM artists working throughout the SMP model invented and cultivated by the company. It’s humorous… when this was first launched I assumed it was hopelessly noisy. However, in comparison with the stuff SM is placing out these days it sounds virtually quaint.
Melody isn’t the most important draw of Maxstep. It’s extra involved with puffed-up bravado, countless energy notes and stomping dubstep manufacturing. However, there’s a way of silliness that makes its lesser moments extra tolerable. It helps that the vitality by no means lets up – even when the instrumental is basically simply farting at us. I really like the heavy steel depth of all of it.

2PM – Lovely (2012)
For those who haven’t checked out 2PM’s intensive Japanese discography, I like to recommend doing so. This music is usually superior to their Korean work and consists of fairly just a few nice singles. Lovely is the primary monitor to be taken from their second J-pop album and was written by agency-head JYP.
Whereas I believe the group has stronger singles, Lovely’s chugging dance beat and hovering melodies go down simple. I admire how cohesive the whole monitor is, shifting depth however by no means abandoning its core groove. It’s old school that method. With that mentioned, I believe Lovely is lacking one knockout second to essentially push it excessive. Its icy disco strings come shut!
